June 4, 2007 (Press Release) --
Riverside, CA (PRWEB) June 4, 2007 -- Readers who have bought into the stereotype that most drug addicts and criminals come from dysfunctional families may be surprised to find out that the main character in Robert Hammond's new novel, "Grace Period: The Awakening of Abel Adams" (ISBN 978-1-60266-353-3, Xulon Press, 2007) grew up in a loving, Christian home. Though it is a work of fiction, Hammond wants his audience to recognize that children from Christian homes are not immune to temptation, addiction or other problems.
Early on in "Grace Period" Abel Adams' Aunt Delilah predicts that he will grow up to be a preacher. However, instead of a life of righteousness, Abel begins to make poor choices at a young age and quickly falls into a downward spiral of drugs and crime. Abel's heart wrenching journey of deceit and disillusionment is much like a hell on earth, but his story ultimately ends in salvation. "From the moment I began to read "Grace Period" I was hooked, I didn't lay this one down until I'd read every word. I'm not sure any review can do justice to this amazing story," says Debra Gaynor of Reader Views. "Grace Period" was a finalist in both the African-American and Religion categories of the 2007 National Indie Excellence Book Awards.
"Grace Period" was inspired by the classic parable of the prodigal son from the New Testament, and the character of Abel Adams was inspired by several modern true stories of triumph over addiction. Abel's desires to find his place in the world, to be loved and to find freedom are universal desires, to which readers of any background can relate. At the heart of "Grace Period" is the theme of redemption, something Hammond believes is not only a universal desire, but a universal need, as well.
"The grace of God is so profound, so far-reaching that it is almost impossible to imagine," says Hammond. "The realization of that grace is freedom."
In a culture where drug use and crime is often glamorized through entertainment media, "Grace Period" provides a strong response to popular attitudes and demonstrates the harsh realities of such life choices. The inspirational story of Abel Adams offers hope and will capture the readers' hearts with its message of unconditional love and salvation.
